Oregon: unspoiled beauty

the.e.t April 12, 2012 North America, USA 13 Comments

I actually wanted to use the word pristine in the title of this blogpost, because pristine means ‘remaining in a pure state, uncorrupted by civilization’. But pristine beauty might sound a bit over the top, doesn’t it? But actually, I couldn’t stress hard enough how amazing and jawdroppingly beautiful Oregon is. I know, for Europeans the state of Oregon is not a very well known or popular destination. And therefore I say ‘for shame, Europe, for shame’!

A trip to this awesome west coast US state probably means flying into Portland (which you can do directly from Amsterdam by the way). Which is a good thing. I would even say Portland is my favorite city on the entire west coast. Yes, I realize that’s a bold statement, but Portland is so cute, so pretty, so hipster, there are so many microbreweries, there are parties, cool hotels, awesome bars, gorgeous parks, fancy shops, … Whatever you’re looking for, Portland has got it. The most amazing book stores, donut stores where you can get married, school buildings turned to party hotspots, famous second hand stores. I can’t think of anything wrong with this city. I stayed in the Ace Hotel by the way, which was … could you suggest another synonym for amazing? My thesaurus ran out of words. But you get the point.

If you find the strength to leave Portland (which I have regretted ever since I visited), there’s quite a surprise waiting for you at the shore. Oregon has the most interesting coastline I’ve ever seen, it’s so rugged, so pristine. I’ve never seen anything like it. Don’t expect popular beaches packed with tourists, instead expect natural beauty at it’s best. The famous highway 101 takes you all the way to the border with California, which is nice too, but different obviously. Anyway, since I’ve run out of synonyms for beautiful, I will just show you some pictures. And I’ll look up some new adjectives for my next post, I promise.

Oregon? Who would have guessed (and I am FROM the states). Amazing pictures. I am officially jealous.

Just take your car, Becca, leave Youngsville Louisiana, and head west to north-west. Then you’ll start getting to where you are going, to put it in your own words. Believe me, it’s well worth it! (and I should probably go to Louisiana someday, I’ve never been in that area)

I’m so glad you wrote about our hometown and state! We LOVE PDX and Oregon. Thanks for sharing such a lovely adventure.

I saw Oregon just last year; my family lives there, and I was visiting. I agree about picturesque integrity of it; I couldn’t stop looking back at the mountains shadowing the shore when I visited the beach, and it was marvellous looking through the trees on either side driving there.

And I remember Portland too; according to my memory, Voodoo Donuts was quite a popular place. That wasn’t the one you meant when you said “donut shops where you could get married”, was it? Cause if it was… weird.

(But then again, that is their saying: Keep Portland Weird. According to mom.)

Nice pictures. And by the way, I have some synonyms for amazing: dazzling, wonderous, spectacular, awesome, lovely, brilliant, incredible, excellent, marvellous. Just so you know there are plenty.

I believe it was Voodoo Donuts. Weird, yes, but that’s exactly the reason to go to Portland. Weird and wonderous. Thanks for the synonyms by the way. Excellent!

I am hoping for a trip to Portland and Oregon in mid-June. Thanks for sharing pictures of your adventure – Portland has been long on my list of US cities to visit. Finally I get to try the lefse at the Viking Soul Food cart. Thanks for stopping by my blog :-)

And Oregon thanks you for the compliments! Though we are pretty ambivalent about spreading the word. We love the tourists but are also afraid of losing that pristine beauty. So glad you enjoyed your stay!!!

Yeah, I realize I shouldn’t share this travel secret with too many people, but my visitors are the good kind of tourists. And for now there are not thousands of them, so we’re still good. After the.ego.tripper gets too popular, I will delete this post.

        Haha… good plan! Thanks. :)

The Oregon coast is indeed quite spectacular. Unlike a number of other coastal states, Oregon has preserved public access to the coast every few miles along 101. Another fine trip is the drive along the Columbia River Gorge to The Dalles and then looping back through Mt. Hood. We happened to do this during Bing cherry season. where we bought them fresh picked from the farm for 50 cents a pound.

Pristine?! ABSOLUTELY!! I lived in PDX as a kid and I return often because it’s (oregon in general) is the only place to make me cry (in a good way) when crossing the state line. I live in Montana now but I find my heart and my mind racing through the PRISTINE forests, down under crowded highways to the coastal majesties. The people of Oregon take good care of their wilderness with the exception of a few logging areas and paper mills, but the logging is done in a renewable manner. I love and always will love Oregon, it’s a hidden Gem.
